Why you want an Intimacy Coordinator

Would you shoot a physically challenging, potentially dangerous stunt, like say someone crashing through a window, without a stunt coordinator? There is no difference between them and intimacy coordinators in terms of importance and process.

Creating a Safer Industry

It is easy to forget that the set is a workplace buzzing under OSHA rules, SAG-AFTRA, IATSE, WGA, DGA, and TEAMSTERS protocols. Yet, we are all human and we bring our entire lives with us to work. But often in these imaginary circumstances under which we work emotional stress can turn up unexpectedly causing harm and at the very least slowing down the day. Intimacy coordinators help to facilitate an environment that is respectful and supportive. By clarifying boundaries and consent before the camera rolls, the director can freely realize their creative vision with a cast and crew that is fully informed.

The introduction of intimacy coordinators is a key step in making it safer for actors and crew when filming simulated sex, nudity, or other hyper-exposed scenes.

Choosing the right
Intimacy Coordinator

While an intimacy coordinator does not have to be certified to practice, it is well advised to seek input from those working in the field before you venture out to become an IC or consider hiring someone who isn’t certified.

Certified intimacy coordinators are highly trained in everything from Trauma, Mental Health First Aid, DEIJ, and gender identity and expression, to modesty garments and barriers, intimate choreography and sexual dramaturgy. Many ICs come from backgrounds not at all associated with motion picture production, such as sex therapists and grief counselors.

The choice in hiring an intimacy coordinator can be
personality-driven or not, but directors, producers, and production must understand the role of the intimacy coordinator, and how ICs will need to interact with you, your team, and the actors. Be confident that the IC of your choice communicates clearly with you in a style and manner that you understand, and will add a space for peace and solutions. This varies from studio productions to student films, but in the end, it is relationship-based and requires understanding and empathy all around.
