Why Intimacy Coordination Works
Emotional safety is as vital as physical safety, and we need to accept that as part of present-day working protocols. Much like stunt coordinators, intimacy coordinators ensure safety and provide expertise within their narrow, yet complex, scope of responsibility. Through clear and positive communication, we establish boundaries and consent with actors, help to manage expectations and assist in the logistics of choreography.
By clarifying most of this in prep, intimacy coordinators help to create a set environment that is supportive and free from harm.
Preparing for on-set success
90% of the work happens in prep. Intimacy coordinators work across departments to ensure everyone is on the same page.
This includes script breakdowns, establishing clear communication with both actors and production, scene preparation meetings, establishing boundaries, assisting with nudity riders, identifying appropriate modesty garments and barriers, and clearing up every need in advance.
Once on set, intimacy coordinators are available to provide support and advocate for actors. Should an issue arise, the IC is there to help resolve it quickly and respectfully.
